Jess Nix’s practice focuses on representing clients in complex litigation matters primarily in federal trial and appellate courts. He also advises clients on strategies to avoid potential litigation and on strategies to resolve pending litigation prior to trial. On behalf of clients in the transportation, financial, and other industries, as well as public sector clients, Jess has participated in briefing in the United States Supreme Court, the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals. He was also part of a litigation team representing a bond insurer in the Jefferson County, Alabama bankruptcy proceeding, which at the time of its filing was the largest-ever municipal bankruptcy, involving nearly $4 billion in debt, primarily resulting from the County’s issuance of sewer warrants.
Prior to joining the firm, Jess served as a deputy attorney general with the Alabama Attorney General’s Office, and as an associate with one of the largest civil defense firms in the southeastern U.S. As a deputy attorney general, Jess prosecuted capital litigation appeals on behalf of the State in state and federal appellate courts, including successfully briefing and arguing in a habeas proceeding before the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals. As an associate at his prior firm, Jess worked on trial and appellate matters, including on a team representing the State of Alabama in litigation involving the States of Georgia and Florida over water rights in the Chattahoochee River. Jess also worked in the intellectual property group at his prior firm, where he advised clients regarding contractual issues, filed and prosecuted trademark and copyright applications, successfully briefed appeals to the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, and worked on patent and copyright infringement litigation in federal court from both the plaintiff and defense sides.
Since 2014, Alabama Super Lawyers has recognized Jess as a “Rising Star,” a designation awarded to no more than 2.5 percent of the lawyers statewide.
